Tenemos agua / We have water

HdV recientemente tuvo otra gran razón para celebrar... se instaló nuestra pipa de agua! La tubería de agua de dos pulgadas se desarrollará de la calle Belmont hasta la entrada del jardin. Esta tubería proporcionará agua para todas nuestras necesidades cultivarías. Esto fue un gran cumplimiento para nosotros porque conseguir la tubería de agua y instalar el cerco son dos tareas principales que tenemos que completar antes de que podamos comenzar a cultiva la tierra. Ahora estamos de una media manera allí! Pero tenemos que recordad que el agua es un elemento que estará en nuestras mentes diario porque vivimos en un desierto. Así que HdV tendrá que pensar en maneras de cómo podemos reducir nuestro uso de agua. Es algo que será difícil pero si lo podemos hacer. Definitivamente, queremos enviar unas ENORMES gracias a las obras públicas por venir al sitio y instalar la pipa de agua por nosotros! Ellos también aplanaron el suelo para nosotros! Ya casi estamos listo para empezar la plantación en las próximas semanas!!

HdV recently had another big reason to celebrate… our water pipe was installed! The two inch water pipe that will run from Belmont Street all the way across to the front entrance will provide water for all of our gardening needs. This is a big deal for us because getting the water pipe and fence installed are two major tasks that have to be completed before we can begin gardening.  Now we’re half way there! However, water is something that HdV will have to think about everyday. Because of our geographical location we will have to think of the best strategies to reduce water usage and work with the desert ecosystem to grow our produce… which can be a big challenge but ultimately something we look forward to. We definitely want to send out a HUGE thanks to public works for coming out and installing the pipe for us! They also planed out the ground for us so it is nice and flat. We are just about ready to get started planting in the coming weeks!!

Trabajando en la tierra / Working on the land

 

Manteniendo un horario de limpieza en el jardín es de máxima importancia para HdV estos días. Cuanto más rápido este limpia la tierra- más rápido podremos comenzar a crecer en ella! Esta semana las jornadas de trabajo eran todo sobre control de malezas y preparar el sitio para el compuesto. A nuestra llegada, era fácil a ver que la tierra estaba siendo consumida por las malas hierbas gigantes. Nuestra tarea consistía en sacar a estos monstruos de la tierra y a ponerlos en grandes montones a secarse en el sol. Tenemos la intención de secar las malas hierbas para luego utilizarlas como ayudantes en nuestros esfuerzos de compostaje.

 

Mientras limpiábamos el sitio nos sorprendimos por el número de plantas comestibles que encontramos! Esta planta en particular es muy especial! Es un tipo de Artemisa- una planta que es nativa de esta región (costa occidental de Baja California y California) y en ningún otro lugar! WOW! Fue una gran sorpresa encontrar la y sin duda la vamos a cuidar.

 

 

 

 

 

Keeping a cleaning schedule at the garden is of paramount importance to HdV these days. The quicker we get the land cleaned up- the quicker we can start growing on it! This week the work days were all about weed control and prepping the site for composting. Upon arrival it was easy to see that the land was being consumed by giant weeds. Our task then was to pull out these monsters and gather them in big piles to dry in the sun. We plan to dry the weeds out and use them later as helpers in our composting efforts.

While pulling the weeds we were surprised by the number of wild edible plants that we found on the site! This particular plant is really special! It is a type of sagebrush- a coastal sage scrub plant that is native to this region (Western coast- Baja and California) and no where else! WOW! It was such a treat to find this one and we will definitely keep it safe.

Delicioso Chayote / Mmmm...Chayote

No importa si usted prefiere llamar lo chayote, chuchu, cho-cho, calabaza de pera, mirliton o pipinola una cosa sigue siendo lo mismo… estos miembros de la familia de las cucurbitáceas son deliciosos! Además- están llenos de vitamina C y aminoácidos, por lo que son buenos para consumir! La semana pasada decidimos plantar un puñado de estos sabrosos tesoros para asegurarse de que sean una parte del jardín. Pero… el problema con chayote, como sus primos, la sandia, el pepino y la calabaza- es que necesitan mucho espacio para crecer. Al pensar en cómo podríamos incorporar el chayote en nuestro plan de jardín, decidimos que sería genial para crecer los a lo largo del cerco del jardín. Esto permitirá que las vides del chayote crezcan como loco en expansión y se entrelazan con cientos de pies de cerco… también producirán un hermoso fondo verde para nuestros jardineros.

Whether you prefer to call chayote- chuchu, cho-cho, pear squash, mirliton, or pipinola one thing remains the same- these members of the gourd family are delicious! Plus they are packed with vitamin C and amino acids- so they’re good for you! Last week we decided to plant a handful of these tasty treasures to make sure they are a part of the garden. However, the problem with chayote- like their cousins’ watermelon, cucumber, and squash- is that they need plenty of room to grow. When thinking about how we could incorporate them into our garden plan we decided it would be great to grow them along the fence surrounding the garden. This will allow the chayote vines to grow like crazy sprawling along and intertwining with hundreds of feet of fencing and provide a beautiful green background for our gardeners.  

Spring is in the air

After weeks of watering and tending to our first harvest our vegetables are in full bloom! Our mini greenhouse surprised us with tons of little green seedlings (more than 500 in the first batch) that we decided to plant another batch!! Now that the land agreement has been finalized and we’re certain that these plants will have a home… why not? J And it looks like our first batch is going to be delicious… as we’ve seen proof that caterpillars are enjoying them already! Not to be outshined- our vermicompost is also doing FANTASTIC! We started with 25 worms four months ago and now have over 1000!! Making it one of the most fertile soils on the planet! WOW!

Keeping with the positive energy around us we decided to do some spring cleaning on the land as well! Our first official clean up day was on Saturday the 13^th. A few members from HdV got together to collect trash and debris off the land, move large rocks and concrete off the property, and remove rubble and waste. The crew worked hard for hours…but there is a lot more to do. The site used to be old houses that were bought up by the city and demolished years ago. Unfortunately some of the remains from the houses was never cleaned up and is still on the property. Looks like there will be many ‘spring cleaning’ days in our near future :)

Después de semanas de regar y cuidar a nuestras semillas que plantamos hace tiempo… nuestras verduras están creciendo! Nuestro mini invernadero nos sorprendió un día con un montón de pequeñas plantas verdes (más de 500 en la primera tanda) así que decidimos plantar otro lote! Ahora que el acuerdo de la tierra ha sido finalizado y estamos seguros de que estas plantas tendrán una casa ¿por qué no, verdad? J Y parece que nuestro primer grupo va a ser delicioso... como hemos visto pruebas de que las orugas ya están disfrutando de ellos! Nuestro lombricompuest tambien esta de maravilla! Empezamos con 25 lombrices hace cuatro meses...ahora tenemos mas de 1000 lombrices!! WOW!

Siguiendo con la energía positiva que nos rodea estos días nos decidimos también a hacer una limpieza de primavera en la tierra! Nuestro primer día oficial de limpieza era el sábado 13 de abril. Algunos miembros de HdV se reunieron para recoger la basura y los escombros de la tierra, mover grandes rocas y hormigón fuera de la propiedad, y la remoción de escombros y residuos. El equipo trabajó duro por varias horas... pero hay mucho más que hacer. Nos enteramos que el sitio antes era de casas antiguas que fueron comprados por la ciudad y demolidos hace años. Pero desafortunadamente, algunos de los restos de las casas nunca fueron limpiados y siguen en la propiedad. Parece que habrá mucho mas días de "limpieza de primavera" en nuestro futuro cercano :)

Environmental Justice Tour with Communities for a Better Environment

On April 6th Huerta del Valle members joined Communities for a Better Environment (CBE) on one of their neighborhood tours lead by community members and organizers at their office.  We learned a lot about South East Los Angeles (Hyde Park, Boyle Heights, Willmington, Vernon, San Pedro and other cities) and some of the ways communities there are working to create healthier environments.

The tour started with a workshop lead by the CBE staff featuring some history and maps of the area. We learned a lot from this and took good notes to help us in creating our own tour.

El 6th de abril miembros de Huerta del Valle se juntaron con Comunidades para un medio ambiente mejor (CMM) para participar en uno de sus guias por el pueblo con miembros de la comunidad y organizadoras como líderes. Aprendimos mucho sobre el sur este de Los Angeles (Hyde Park, Boyle Heights, Willmington, Vernon, San Pedro y otras ciudades) y tambien algunas de las maneras que las comunidades están trabajando para crear medio ambientes sanos.

La guía empezó con una taller hecho por los empleados de CMM presentando algunas historias y mapas del área. Aprendimos mucho y tomamos buenos apuntes para ayudarnos crear nuestra propia guia.

The CBE Staff then showed us their neighborhood. They shared with us how their neighborhood grew and developed into what we see today. Then they showed us around pointing out a lot of places where polluting industry is making their neighborhoods less healthy and is polluting everyone's air, soil, and water. They also shared with us the ways that industry has changed their neighborhood drastically, but without consulting the community on their opinions. Time and again when the community was consulted they prefered things like green spaces, parks, and schools over polluting industries. It only takes asking to find out.

Los empleados de CMM nos enseñaron su pueblo. Compartieron las historia de como su pueblo creció y desarrolló a lo cual vemos hoy. Después nos enseño lugares donde industria y fabricas malas están empeorando la salud de sus pueblos y contaminan el aire, la agua, y la tierra. También nos enseñaron las maneras como la industria ha cambiado su pueblo mucho, pero sin consultando a la comunidad para sus opiniones. Pero cundo le preguntas a la comunidad que es lo que ellos prefieren- contestan parques, espacios verdes y abiertos, y escuelas en lugar de industrias que producen polución.

Many small businesses are closed down due to the recession and the cities have responded by bringing in Wal-Mart, Target, and other big name companies even though the community may not be for it. We saw one of these large companies, central metal, where many community members were being polluted by metal dust and had to stand up to question the practices of this big company. We were told stories that community members could taste coins in their mouths from all of the dust.

Muchos negocios familiares y pequeños tuvieron que cerrar por la mala economía y las ciudades han contestado este problema con invitando a Wal-mart, Target, y otras compañías grandes aun que su comunidad no las quieren. Vimos una de estas compañías grandes, Central Metal, donde muchos miembros de la comunidad estaban sufriendo de la polución de polvo de metal y tenían que luchar contra las prácticas de esta compañía grande. Nos contaron historias que la polución estaba tan mal que miembros de la comunidad sabían el polvo de metal en sus bocas.

The LA river is completely covered in concrete in South East LA. The tour guides mentioned to us that further north there is a much nicer part of the river, but down in South East LA it is pure concrete. The guides also told us about a giant mound of concrete rubble that they had to organize to move because it was causing cancer. Some of that concrete was used to build this new rail system to bring more goods from the ports out east to distribution centers like the ones in Ontario. Though it was promised that this would decrease truck traffic the price of train delivery went up and so more trucks are used anyway.

El rio de Los Angeles esta completamente cubierto con concreto en el Sur Este de Los Angeles. Las guias nos mencionaron que mas al norte el rio es muy bonito pero en el Sur es solamente concreto. Las guias tambien comentaron sobre un monton de concreto roto que los miembros de la ciudad tenia que organizarse al contra de porque estaba causando cancer en los residientes. La ciudad uso ese concreto para construir un sistema nuevo de rieles de tren para traer mas productos de los puertos a bodegas como las que se quedan en Ontario. Aun que fue prometido que los riel iban a bajar el volumen de troquas pasando por el pueblo, el precio de trenes subió y ahora hay mas troquas que antes.

At each stop they taught us to recognize toxic facilities in our environment using our senses of smell, sight, taste, touch and hearing. You can read signs like these that tell you from 1-4 how toxic a facility is (4 is the most dangerous). Exide recycles car batteries and is so toxic that if there was a fire- water could not be used to put it out.

En cada parada de la guia nos enseñaron como reconocer fabricas toxicas en nuestro medio ambiente usando nuestras capacidades de escuchar, oler, saber, tocar, y ver. Se puede leer los senales como estos que indican de 1 a 4 que tanto tóxico es una fabrica (4 es lo mas peligroso). Exide recicla baterías de carros y es tan toxica que si se encienda en fuego- los bomberos no pudieran usar agua para apagarlo.

Podemos usar las orejas para oir cuantas troquas y trenes estan pasando- haciendo ruidos y emitando desechos de diesel en el aire.  Podemos usar la nariz para oler cosas toxicas en el aire como los que viene cerca de la fabrica que procesa cuerpos de animales.  Disafortunadamente estos ejemplos hacen mucho olor malo y contamina la tierra.

We can use our ears to hear how many trucks and trains go by making loud noise and put diesel particulate into the air.  We can use our nose to smell toxins like the ones coming from the animal rendering plant where they dispose of dead animal bodies.  Unfortunately this makes the entire place stink and toxifies the soil.

We learned that schools can also be toxic because they are often built on cheap land that has not been cleaned up. Many schools are built on brown-fields like this one where chromium-6 was dumped for many years before the school was built. Conveniently there was a big chromed-out truck parked right in front of the school.

We also got a glimpse of where 40% of the consumer goods we have in the US come from. The port of LA and Long Beach bring in products from around the world and distribute them as far as Chicago and New York. Thousands of Diesel trucks pass this site everyday many heading for places in the IE to drop cargo. Billions of dollars of revenue are made from this site, while millions of pounds of pollution are also generated. We learned that the folks who are making money from the ports do not choose to live near them because they are too polluted but some people do live there.

Aprendimos que las escuelas también pueden ser tóxicas porque muchas veces están construidas encima de tierra que no han limpiado.  Muchas escuelas están construidos en "brown fields" (como este en la photo) donde se descargaban cimicos como "chromium-6" por muchos anos antes de que se construyeron las escuelas. Con suerte vimos una camioneta donde se queda mucha chorme estacionado en frente en el calle.

También vimos de donde viene 40% de los productos que tenemos en los EE. UU.  Los puertos de LA y Long Beach traen muchos productos de todo el mundo y los envian tan lejos como a Chicago y Nueva York.  Miles de troquas de diesel pasan por esta area cada día pasando por lugares como el IE para dejar sus productos.  Billones de dólares de ganos están ganado de este sitio mientras tambien estan creando millones de libras de polucion.  Aprendimos que la gente que gana de los puertos no escogen vivir en en los pueblos cerca de la polución por que hay tanta contaminación, pero si ay gente que viven alli.

Las gruas en el puerto fueron la inspiracion para los robotos de 'Darth Vader' en la pelicula Star Wars.

The container cranes were the inspiration for Darth Vedar's giant robots in Star Wars.

 

En cada contenedor posiblemente haya ropa, comestibles, electronicos, video jugetes, muebles, comida para perros y principalmente todas las cosas que compramos.

Each container may contain clothing, food, TVs, video games, furniture, dog food or pretty much anything else we buy.

At the port we saw many oil refineries like BP and Conoco Phillips and their smoke stacks. We learned that the higher the stacks are the more polluting the exhaust that comes out of them is. We saw over and over that working class communities of color are affected most by this pollution and it tends to follow them into their neighborhoods. We heard that CBE and other organizations have worked with these communities to create alternatives to this by organizing, suing polluting facilities, doing research and surveys of community opinions, and working with youth to educate the community about these issues that make health very challenging.

En la puerta vimos refinerías de petrolio como BP y Conoco Phillips y tambien sus chimeneas de humo. Aprendimos que lo mas alto que estan las chimineas en el aire hacen mas polución.  Vimos una y otra vez que gente de clase obrera y de color son los mas afectados de la pollution y siempre los sigue en sus pueblos.  Escuchamos que CMM y otras organizaciones estan trabajado con las comunidades para crear alternativas de problemas de salud por organizando, haciendo litigación contra las companias que hacen polución, haciendo investigaciones con la comunidad por inquestas, y entreniendo jóvenes para educar a la comunidad sobre esas temas que estan haciendo la buena salud muy difícil.

 At the end of the day it really is all about the youth who are growing up in this environment.  How do we make alternatives?  What would a really healthy and sustainable environment look like?  What does a healthy school and healthy neighborhood look like and how can we word towards it?

Al fin del dia realmente la situacion impacta mas a los jovenes quienes estan creciendo en este medio ambiente. ¿Como les ofrecemos alternativas? ¿Como se miraria un medio ambiente sano y sostentible de verdad? ¿Como se miran las escuelas sanas y pueblos sanos y como podemos trabajar por ellos?

It's all about values

Keeping our values as the center/ core of our community of practice is something that all the members of HdV take pride in because they are guiding words and principles that we came up with collectively as a group (at our first community meeting- last November!) and feel strongly that by upholding them all members, the organization, and most importantly the community will benefit! 

Our values are…

 **Respect... The most important thing in any relationship. Recognizing people who are taking leadership and trusting their leadership knowing we can all be leaders. Respecting those who have made strong commitments to leadership while demanding respect from any and everyone. Keep open communication with your neighbors and community members.
** Responsibility...

Ensuring that the core values ​​of the garden are the foundation that help us make decisions, which motivates us to work together, to meet our obligations, and support the project in order for it to be successful. Keeping in mind that when you are in the garden we are all a family and everybody’s actions will be a reflection of HDV as a whole. Holding each other accountable to follow all the rules and make sure our values guide our actions.

** Dedication...

Taking the time to be familiar with all of the HdV core values. Surrendering yourself to the project in order to make it reality. Finding ways no matter the challenge to make the garden successful.

** Harmony...

Finding the balance with people and the land. You need humility to have harmony. Be humble in your actions. Treating everybody that works in the garden as your equal. Accepting people as they are- as well as respecting the physical and mental abilities of everyone in the community. Making sure not to criticize or offend others.

** Listening...

Using more than just your ears to hear whenever a member of the community is talking ... also opening your mind to new ideas, keeping open arms to support others, and keeping an open heart to empathize with our neighbors.

**Sharing...

Keeping open communication with all members of the community. Allowing everybody to express their views on issues pertaining to the garden such as land decisions, our responsibilities, work, or resources so that nobody feels like they don’t have a voice. Allowing others to express themselves, to speak of their differences, histories and experiences so that we can all support and encourage each other. Remembering our mission statement and core values- and making sure that we are constantly discussing both of them to ensure we are always moving towards the same goal.

** Support...

Doesn’t necessarily stop at physical- but remember the emotional and spiritual. Knowing that you can count on members for help but also know that they are counting on you for your help. Giving each other a hand whenever it is necessary. Cooperating with one another with the ideology that we have the same goals and we want to see our neighbors succeed in their projects.

** Love...

A burning passion that we have inside of ourselves to make a difference in our community. A feeling that motivates us or encourages us to help our neighbors, our friends, and our families by introducing them to a new way of life, a healthier life, a happy and content life

** Humility...

It is embedded in harmony. Recalling that we are all working as a group. Seeing everyone in the community as equals- whether in the ideas, intelligence, and their dedication to make the garden a success. Putting yourself in other people’s shoes, trying to look at problematic situations through different perspectives. Taking the time to get to know each other.

**Good Conduct...

Doing good in all your actions. Doing good by all residents of the area as well as the other participants of the garden. Respecting the community and most importantly the earth. Recalling that words are very powerful, and promising to use words that support our values. Using respectful language.

**Communication...

Giving everyone enough time to talk and express their ideas fully. Taking moments of reflection to see if it is the right time to share what you would say. Examining the feelings we have inside and respecting them. Remembering the importance of working out conflicts in a calm and respectable manner in order to harmony in balance.

** Justice...

En manteniendo a nuestros valores como el centro de nuestra comunidad de práctica es algo que todos los miembros de HdV se sienten muy orgullosos de estar haciendo. Por utilizar palabras y principios que se nos ocurrieron colectivamente como grupo- todos los miembros, la organización, y más importante la comunidad se beneficiará!

**Respeto...

Lo más importante en cualquier relación. Reconocer a los que toman roles de liderazgo y tener confiase en ellos, manteniendo en mente que todos podemos ser lideres. Estar en óptima comunicación con sus vecinos y miembros de la comunidad . 

**Responsabilidad...

Asegurar que los valores del jardín serán la base fundamental que nos ayuda a hacer decisiones, que nos motiva a trabajar juntos, a cumplir nuestras obligaciones, e a apoyar el proyecto para ser un exito. Cuando una persona está en el jardín que se ponga en el pensamiento que somos una familia y las acciones de una persona serán reflejo de todos involucrados con HdV. Asíque, debemos de seguir todas las reglas y asegurar que los valores dirigen nuestros acciones.

** Dedicación...

Tomar el tiempo para familiar se con todos los valores de HdV. Entregarse a la realización del proyecto. Buscar formas para que el jardín sea un éxito.

Un balance de los humanos y la tierra. Depende de la humildad. Ser humilde en tus acciones. Mirar a todos que están trabajando con nosotros como iguales. Aceptar a las personas tal y como son- respetar su capacidad física y mental de todos en la comunidad.

** Escuchar ...

Usar más que las orejas para oír cuando un miembro de la comunidad está hablando… abrir también la mente a nuevas ideas, los brazos a dar apoyo, y el corazón a simpatizar con nuestros vecinos

** Apoyo...

Es tanto lo físico como lo emocional o sentimental. Saber que uno puede contar con los miembros por ayuda pero saber también que ellos están contando con la ayuda de usted. Dar la mano a cualquier momento que sea necesario. Cooperación con otros concorde con el  pensamiento que tenemos las mismas metas y queremos ver a nuestros vecinos y/o compañeros ser gran éxitos en sus proyectos.

**Compartir ...

Usar la comunicación para que todos de la comunidad puedan expresar sus opiniones en asuntos del jardín- por ejemplo en decisiones de la tierra, nuestras responsabilidades, el trabajo, o de los recursos para que nadie se sienta como que no cuenta o no tiene vos. Hablar de las diferencias, historias o experiencias de cada uno en forma para apoyar y motivar unos a los otros. Recordar nuestra misión y discutirla consistentemente para asegurar que todos vayamos hacia la misma meta.

** Amor ...

La pasión que tenemos de por dentro para hacer una diferencia en nuestra comunidad. Un sentimiento que nos motiva o nos da anima de ayudar a nuestros vecinos, nuestros amigos, y nuestras familias en forma de introducirlos a una nueva manera de vivir- una vida mas saludable, feliz, y contenta

** Humildad...

Resulta en la armonía. Recordar que todos estamos trabajando como un grupo. Ver a todos en la comunidad como iguales en las ideas, inteligencia, y dedicación a que se entregan para el éxito del jardín. Ponerse en el lugar de los otros- tratar de mirar a las situaciones en maneras que a lo mejor no son idéales pero le den vos a otros para expresar se. Tomar el tiempo para conocer uno al otro.  

** Comportamiento...

Portarse bien en todas sus acciones. Hacer bien con  todos los residentes de la área y los otros participantes del jardín. Demostrar respecto a la comunidad y más importante a la tierra. Recordar que las palabras son muy poderosas- y comprometerse a usar palabras que apoyan nuestros valores, no palabras groseras o que pueden ofender a otros.

**Comunicación...

Darles a todos suficiente tiempo de hablar y expresar sus ideas. Tomar momentos de reflexión para saber si es el momento apropiado de compartir lo que uno quiere decir. Examinar los sentimientos que tenemos por dentro y respetarlos. Recordar que es importante de discutir cualquieras acciones que no le parece bien con respecto para mantener la armonía.

**Justicia...

Como se ve el amor.

 

New Truck on the Block

Recently HdV added a new member to our automobile family… a monster sized Chevy 3500 stake bed work truck! We purchased the truck from Tom Barney and K-12 Books… Tom used to transport school textbooks for K-12 (for over 20 years!) but ended up selling the truck now that digital education is taking over in the classrooms and he doesn’t have a need for a large textbook hauling machine. At the garden we will help the truck continue with its community serving lifestyle by using it to help with composting and various other farm needs.

Recientemente HdV añadido un nuevo miembro a nuestra familia automóvil... una monstruosa camioneta de trabajo Chevy 3500! Compramos la camioneta de Tom Barney y K-12 Books. Tom utilizaba la camioneta para transportar libros de texto escolares para K-12 (desde hace más de 20 años!), Pero terminó vendiendo la camioneta ya que la educación digital se está apoderando mas en las escuelas y él no sentía la necesidad de tener un camión gigante para transportar solo unos pocos de libros. En el jardín el camión continuar con su estilo de vida sirviendo a la comunidad- ayudándonos con las necesidades agrícolas de compuesto y varios otros trabajos.

MEGA MILESTONE!

April 5^th 2013 has become a day of monumental importance to Huerta del Valle! After months of negotiations, sorting out final details, and excruciating “waiting” periods with the city of Ontario… our land use agreement was signed and finalized!!! Woo Hoo!

It’s a wonderful feeling for all of us at HdV to see how an idea that was thought of years ago,  was so eagerly embraced by the community, then shaped and transformed on so many different levels to meet their need, has now finally become a reality that is certain to change lives.
Huerta del Valle officially has a place to call “home”:)The land agreement will grant HdV access to the land for the next 10 years with a five year renewal plan option… although we plan on being there for much longer! Over the next couple weeks the 3 acre piece of land located behind Bon View Park in South Ontario is getting ready to undergo a major transformation- first the irrigation will be installed, then the fence will be put up, and finally the residents will be able to let their green thumbs work their magic! This is just the beginning!
Throughout this long process there have been so many individuals and organizations that have believed in the vision of HdV, dedicated their time and efforts towards our cause, offered supported and/or advice, and helped make our dream a reality.

The city of Ontario, Jerry Blum, Karen Thompson, Rudy Zeledon, and the entire City of Ontario Planning Dept, Kaiser Permanente, Carrie Hempel, Anees Naime, John Bridge, and UCI School of Law, Pitzer College, Susan Philips, Pitzer student volunteers, The Wheelhouse, Ontario community volunteers, all anybody else who gave us a chance. We could never say ‘thank you’ enough to all of you… but we’ll definitely try J THANK YOU!

05 de abril 2013 se ha convertido en un día de enorme importancia para Huerta del Valle! Después de meses de negociaciones, la clasificación de los detalles finales y momentos  "de espera" con la ciudad de Ontario ... nuestro acuerdo de uso de la tierra, se firmó y finalizado! Fantástico!
Es una sensación maravillosa para todos nosotros en HdV a ver cómo una idea que se pensó hace años, estaba tan ansiosamente abrazada por la comunidad, se ha cambiado de forma y se transforma en tantos niveles diferentes para satisfacer las necesidades de la comunidad, ahora se ha convertido finalmente en una realidad- que es seguro va a cambiar las vidas de muchos residentes.
El acuerdo permitirá a HdV el acceso a la tierra para los próximos 10 años, con una opción de plan de renovación de cinco años ... pero nosotros planeamos estar allí por mucho mas tiempo que eso! Durante las próximas semanas la tierra de 3 acres que esta detrás del parque Bon View en el sur de Ontario está a punto de someterse a una gran transformación, primero el riego se instalará, a continuación, el cerco será instalado, y por último, los residentes serán capaz de trabajar su magia jardinera! Y esto es sólo el principio!

Durante este largo proceso ha habido tantas personas y organizaciones que han creído en la visión de HdV, que han dedicado su tiempo y sus esfuerzos para nuestra causa, ofreció apoyo y / o asesoramiento, y han ayudó a que nuestro sueño se haga una realidad.
